Matilda Kang’ombe is the founder of Community Youth Empowerment for Self Reliance (CYESR).

CYESR is working with small scale farmers in M’chewere, Msenga and Chiputu villages, in Lilongwe Rural West. Small scale farmers work with their local leaders and CYESR to acquire skills in rice production as alternative source of livelihood. The communities possess 30 hectares of wetland suitable for rice and other horticultural production.  During needs assessment meetings, the farmers identified their primary challenges as lack of skills in rice farming and lack of market access.

CYESR was able to connect these small scale farmers with Lifuwu Research Station, which has experts in rice research and rice production. The farmers were trained in rice field management and other specifications for rice farming. CYESR is also assisting the farmers in the search for local markets where there rice can be sold.

CYESR has trained small scale farmers in the following;

  • Community needs assessment and problem identification

  • Farmer club formation including group dynamics, group cohesion and trust building

  • Fertilizer production using locally available resources

  • Irish potato production

  • Maize sasakawa production

  • Nursery tree production
